FAQ

How much does it cost?

It's completely free for all attendees! Food is catered by Eataly, matcha by Bonsai Coffee Bar, plus sparkling waters, sodas, and more all night. If you match with someone you want to follow up with, we'll even cover your coffee the next day.

Do I need to know anyone to come?

Not at all. Many people come solo. Your route card tells you exactly who to meet and when, so you never have to awkwardly walk up to a stranger.

How do you decide who gets in?

We're not looking for the most impressive resume. We want people who are genuinely into something: a startup, a research project, a campus org, a creative practice, or something we've never heard of. If you'd make the room more interesting, you're exactly who we want.

Can I bring a friend?

You can nominate them in the application. They'll still need to apply on their own, but a nomination goes a long way.

I'm in Nexus, sundays, or VEST. Do I get in automatically?

It helps, but everyone goes through the same application. A nomination from a member carries real weight though.

Why do I need to sign in with Google to apply?

Signing in with Google creates your Happenstance profile, which is how we match you with the right people. We use your connections to figure out who you already know and surface the people you should meet. We only see who you're connected to, never your emails, messages, or DMs. No personal information is shared with other attendees.

What is Happenstance?

Happenstance is the AI people search platform that powers The Shortlist. It maps your network, finds the overlaps, and creates your route card so every conversation at the event is worth having. Your profile stays with you after the event so you can continue to create serendipitous connections.

When will I hear back?

Within a few days of applying. Every application is reviewed by a combination of real people and our matching algorithms.
